About Telegathering

Tele-gathering is the largest gathering of a Caribbean Telecommunications Community. It unifies the Caribbean teams and encourages interactions between employees from all islands, strengthening the social structure of the organisation. It is about:

  • Forging Friendships. One of the biggest benefits of Telegathering is that you just can't help but make new friends. Here is where you put a face to the person with whom you would have had numerous conversations with over the phone. As you forge these relationships, you know that no where you travel there is always someone you can call a friend. It also makes your work easier, the next time you need information you can pick up the phone and call a friend instead of 'just' a colleague.
  • Exploring the islands of the Caribbean. Each visit includes an island tour which includes popular sites on the host island. Learn about the island and it history. Taste the local cuisines. Individual can also extend their stay and use this opportunity to visit other islands in the vicinity which do not have a Cable & Wireless presence
  • Touching the lives of the community. The community project is an opportunity for Cable & Wireless staff to give something back to population of the host country. Events will range from repairing a children's home for disabled children, to creating parks for less fortunate neighbourhoods. The cost of the repairs is all funded by Cable & Wireless and through the sponsorship that we receive.
  • A wonderful experience. Activities include a sports day to get that fun but competitive spirit going. A team consists of persons from each island giving you another opportunity to mingle. Other activities include a cultural show where each island gets to share a little something about their culture. Of course no trip will be complete without a shopping day to pick up a few trinkets to remind you of the experience.

Tele-gathering is planned and orchestrated by staff from start to finish. They fundraise through sponsorship and other activities to meet the cost of the trip. We have found that this builds strong teamwork and leadership skills. It gives non managerial staff the opportunity to be project leaders, develop budgeting and planning skills where they would not normally be afforded this opportunity within their current role. Tele-gathering XIV starts Wednesday, 8th April 2009 and continues until Tuesday, 14th April 2009.

History

Tele-Gathering is an annual event hosted by the sports clubs of the Caribbean Telecommunications companies.  The name has been coined from the words tele to signify the link to the telecommunications industry, and gathering associated with the activities as a gathering/meeting or reunion of associates.

Over the years, telecommunications colleagues recognizing the similarity of interest during the course of working life, organized exchange visits to meet and socialize with each other.  These exchange visits includes sporting, cultural, social outreach and exploration of tourism benefits of the host country.

As a result of the exchange visits, employees in the telecommunications industry develop bonds that benefit them professionally and personally.  In addition, industry integration is strengthened.

Through this forum Tele-Gathering started with three (3) Business Units Sports Clubs, in St. Vincent & the Grenadines in 1995.
